Virtual Reality Training

 OBJECTIVE

How do we educate new factory workers who are unable to travel for in-person training due to the pandemic?

Create a virtual tour of the factory that not only solves the issue of how to train remotely, but also serves as a tool that can be for reference and continuous efficiency improvement amongst the existing international company-wide workforce.

The full tour is confidential, but a small-scale demo is available upon request.

PUTTING THE PUZZLE TOGETHER

First, we identified what we need to communicate to the new factory associates. We asked about the current pain points - what’s confusing to the associates and where the bottlenecks are. After conducting research on the floor we went back to the whiteboard and brainstormed ideas for how to solve these problems with this technlogy.

There are many different types of learners as well as many different kinds of applications for the virtual reality trainign materials we delivered. So, it made sense for us to create multiple ways for an associate to navigate the virtual tour. The factory floor can be traversed Google Street View-style, from a flow chart illustrating the sequential production process or by selecting a particular piece of equipment and zooming over to the room where the equipment is in use.

Other tour features include an aerial perspective captured iwth a drne-mounted 360 camera, interactive hotspots triggering pop-up info boxes, animated video embeds and a repository of safety & compliance documents.

FINAL PRODUCT

Oatly has a strong (and fun!) brand. Even though, the material we’re conveying is very technical, it was important that we maintain Oatly’s visual identity and irreverently goofy brand voice.

To keep the educational experience fun and light-hearted, we kept the copy colloquial and added a bynch of audio-visual easter eggs. We even added a gaming component with a scorecard.

The interactive virtual tour can be accessed on desktop and mobile as well as in a VR headset from a single URL or via a locally stored application. In addition, we also created a 2D video to orient folks who may be new to navigating virtual reality experiences.

The tour is capable of integrating with Oatly’s Leaning Management System (LMS). Future iterations can scale from the same foundation as we continue to learn how the employees learn best.
